What is Nazarene Missions International (NMI)?

Nazarene Missions International, officially recognized as an “auxiliary organization” of the Church of the Nazarene in 1915 at the fourth General Assembly, has been an integral part of local churches since that date. Over the years, the name has changed: 1915—Woman’s Missionary Society (WMS), 1928—Women’s Foreign Missionary Society (WFMS), 1952—Nazarene Foreign Missionary Society (NFMS), 1964—Nazarene World Missionary Society (NWMS), 1980—Nazarene World Mission Society (NWMS), and 2001—Nazarene Missions International (NMI). NMI is no longer an “auxiliary organization” but a vital part of Local Church Ministries in each local church.

The Church of the Nazarene ministers in 164 world areas. And where our churches minister, Nazarene Missions International is there to be “the global missions advocate in every local church, nurturing a spirit of missions, and mobilizing into action, impacting people around the world.”

In 2022, there were 489 missionaries originating from 63 world areas, serving in 91 countries. Of these missionaries, 325 served on global deployment and 164 were on sponsored deployment. Last year, there were 60 new missionary deployments. Within these missionary families, there are 306 missionary kids.

Our denomination has 19,558 organized local NMIs and 1,042,338 members, including 149,990 Associate Members (Associate members are those who are involved and support NMI but are not yet members of the Church of the Nazarene).

NMI Snapshot – Alabaster

During the Global NMI Convention, we will begin celebrating the 75th anniversary of Alabaster. Alabaster offerings, combined with local or district funds, provide the foundation for places where people worship, heal, and learn. The Alabaster goal for this special anniversary, and every year, is to have every local church participating in giving to Alabaster.

Did you know? Nazarenes gave US $2.9 million for Alabaster to fund projects in 2022. The Alabaster Offering is used in all six global regions. No Alabaster funds are used for administrative costs.

Over the next year, from June 2023 through June 2024, an Alabaster video will come out on the third week of each month. These will be brief but exciting stories of how God is working through Alabaster around the world because you gave.
